People who already know you — past colleagues, managers, classmates, friends who run things. They reply because of you, not your pitch.

Cold
Strangers in your niche who fit your offer. They reply because of what you said, not who you are.

People who find you via content or referral. You publish; they show up.

Run all three from week one. Warm gets you to your first 1–2 clients fast. Cold builds the pipeline. Boomerang compounds over months — it takes about 90 days to start working, and the freelancers still doing it on day 90 are the ones with inbound leads on day 365.
Why cold outreach fails: the 4 mistakes
1 — Generic openers
"Hope you're doing well!" goes straight to spam. Fix: reference something specific from their work in the first line — a recent post, launch, hire, or product. Make it clear you're writing to them, not pasting to a list.
2 — Long messages
Anything over 4 sentences gets archived. Fix: what you saw, what you do, one question — under 80 words total. Shorter always wins on a first message.
3 — Asking for a call too early
"Can we hop on a call?" feels like a tax before you've shown value. Fix: offer a small specific thing instead — a 2-minute teardown, a one-page idea, a free audit.
4 — No follow-up
First messages get ignored; follow-ups get replies. Fix: 3 follow-ups, 4–7 days apart, each shorter than the last. The third one is often the one that lands. Silence isn't rejection — it's timing.
The first message template
Every word does a job — specific reference, clear offer, small ask:
Hi [name],
I saw [specific thing they did]. [One-sentence reaction or insight].
I help [WHO] do [WHAT] using [HOW]. [Why this might be relevant to them].
Worth a 10-min call this week — or want me to send a [small specific thing]?
Example, writer → SaaS founder: "Hi Maya, saw your post about resurrecting churned users. Most teams write the retention email last — by then it's too late. I help pre-Series-A SaaS write churn emails that recover 15–20% of cancellations. Want me to send a teardown of your current sequence?"
Your week-one plan
- Build your 50-prospect list in one afternoon: 20 Warm + 20 Cold + 10 Boomerang seeds. A spreadsheet with name, channel, why they fit, and what you'll say first.
- Send the first 10 Warm messages — easiest asks, most likely to convert.
- Schedule a daily cold block — 30 minutes, same time every day. 5 messages/day = 35/week.
